BOOKS

A precious sense of childhood wonder is crystallised through children’s books - their physical form inextricably linked to the natural world through the trees from which they are made. This piece depicts fragile remnants of that inner world, preserved in all their delicacy and fragility against the harsh onslaught of time and reality. It subtly encompasses aspects of fairytales and the physical aesthetics of books, through carefully selected materials. The central paper cutting, created with patterns drawn from a range of embossed book-covers, seeps from a break in the glass dome and risks being forgotten.Around this, hazardous slate and burnt book pages hang to convey feelings of loss and threat when, inevitably, the true harsh nature of the world in which we grow is revealed; the illusion of safety and boundless opportunity built up through childhood stories is shattered.

GROWTH + DECAY

The process of growth and decay is an inevitable part of natures cycles. The patterns of growth and decay within this piece aim to reflect the connections that are made as we experience the world. The memories that form from a young age preserve a sense of wonder, followed by inevitable decay as these fleeting feelings and moments are forgotten. This is further communicated through the anatomical appearance of the paper cutting, the leaf like shapes mirroring neurones and synapses which form and connect in the brain to store memories.Photographing the artwork was an equally important part of the creative process. Considering the effects of the shadows being constructed in the sunlight, and allowing them to warp as the piece turned gave the photographs an elusive ethereal appearance, conveying the transient nature of our experiences.

About

BACKGROUNDHello! I’m Anna, a young artist based in East Sussex, aiming to create art that evokes a sense of peacefulness and fulfilment.I first started paper cutting at 13, practicing on and off through the years, but became fully engrossed in the medium only in recent years when creating a range of delicate abstract pieces for my fine art A-Level.This was where I realised I wanted to become an artist. I finally understood that my paper cuttings don’t have to follow the same rules as traditional paper cutting - it’s okay to create art in your own style and enjoy the whole process!

INSPIRATIONThe concept that every moment in life is temporary, yet lasting, fascinates me. I see a unique beauty in the ever changing yet predictable cycles of nature - however much they evolve over time. This idea inspires me to create art that mimics a momentary permanence. I aim to form a sense of calm around each piece, reminiscent of the underlying comfort found within in the regularity and predictability of these cycles.Another aspect of my inspiration is largely based on feelings: I find light and feelings of nostalgia particularly inspiring - elements that I found especially important when I was beginning my artistic journey. Motivation comes and goes, often brought about simply by positivity and warm sunlight.

WHY ART?Well…
Creativity is what calms me in a world of chaos.
I spend time making this delicate, impermanent artwork to reflect snippets of permanence within the transient processes that occur throughout our lives.I find this an essential key to living in the moment, to appreciate every cycle of sunrise, sunset, every breath, every heartbeat, growth, decay, light and dark. For me, creating isn't just about making something 'pretty' or 'aesthetic’, it's about finding space to breathe, bringing my feelings and understanding of the world into a tangible reality, processing fleeting moments and eternalising them in my own unique way.
